Privacy policy

What we collect, why, how we protect it, and how to have it deleted.

Effective October 29, 2026. Right to Remove is an independent advocacy campaign. It is not yet a registered nonprofit. Questions about this policy go to hello@righttoremove.com.

The short version

  • We never sell or rent your information, and we do not use it for advertising.
  • Stories are encrypted in your browser before they are sent. Only the campaign's offline key can read them.
  • Petition names and ZIP codes are shared only with your own state legislators, and only if you check the box agreeing to it.
  • This site sets no cookies and runs no advertising or tracking scripts.
  • You can ask us to delete your information at any time.

What we collect

Petition signatures

First and last name, email address, ZIP code, whether you live in California (or your state if not), your optional answers to the two checkboxes, and the date you confirmed your signature by email. We use your ZIP code to match you to your California legislative districts.

Stories

Your written answers and optional email address are encrypted in your browser with a public key before they leave your device. We store the encrypted text, plus the category answers you choose (such as the type of content and what you have tried), your optional ZIP code and your consent choices, which we use for anonymous counts.

Volunteer applications and messages

Name, email, optional ZIP code, the roles you choose, and what you write to us.

Technical data

We do not store IP addresses. We store a one way, salted hash of the connection address with each submission to limit spam and abuse. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard request data to deliver and protect the site. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives your browser's request.

How we use it

  • To count and confirm petition signatures, and to show legislators how many of their own constituents support reform.
  • To send the confirmation email you request when you sign, and, if you opt in, occasional updates about hearings, votes and ways to help.
  • To understand how harmful online publications affect people, in anonymous research summaries.
  • To publish a story only in the way its author allowed, after review and redaction.
  • To reply to volunteers, journalists and others who contact us.

Who we share it with

Legislators. If you agree when signing, we may give your first and last name and ZIP code to the state legislators who represent you. We never give them your email address.

Service providers. Cloudflare hosts the site and database. Brevo sends our emails. They process data only to provide those services.

Legal requirements. We would disclose information only if required by a valid legal process, and we will resist overbroad requests where we can. Because stories are encrypted and the key is kept offline, story text cannot be read from our servers.

How long we keep it

  • Unconfirmed petition signatures are deleted after 30 days.
  • Confirmed signatures are kept until the campaign ends, or until you ask us to delete them.
  • Stories, volunteer applications and messages are kept while they are useful to the campaign, and deleted on request.

Your choices and rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your information, or to stop receiving emails, by writing to hello@righttoremove.com. Every update email will include a way to unsubscribe. California residents have additional rights under state privacy law, and we honor access and deletion requests from anyone.

Security

All traffic uses HTTPS. Story text is encrypted end to end with a key that never touches our servers. Access to the campaign database is limited to campaign administrators.

Children

This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date above and describe significant changes on this page.
