Right to Remove

Our standards

How we handle stories, check facts, correct mistakes and stay accountable.

What we stand for. We advocate for remedies against statements a court finds false and defamatory. We do not seek to remove opinion, criticism, truthful reporting or speech on public issues, and we hold ourselves to the same standard of accuracy we ask of others.

Stories

  • Nothing is published automatically. Every story is read by a person, and nothing is published without the permission its author chose.
  • No accusations against third parties. We do not publish the names of people a storyteller believes are responsible, links to the content, or details that would identify them.
  • Redaction first. Before publication we remove names, places, employers, dates and other details that could identify the author, unless the author asked to be named.
  • Labeled honestly. Published stories are presented as the author's own account. Unless we say a story has been verified, we have not independently confirmed its facts.
  • Withdrawal. An author can ask us to remove a published story at any time.
  • No invented stories. We never write, combine or embellish stories, and we never use stock photos of people as if they were the storytellers.

Accuracy and sources

Every fact we publish about the law or about online harm should be supported by a cited, reliable source, such as a statute, a court decision, an official government page or published research. Our guides are general information, not legal advice. Our proposals are labeled as proposals, never as current law.

We do not publish statistics about our own campaign unless they are real and current. Signature counts shown on this site include only signatures confirmed by email.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the correction on the page. To report an error, write to hello@righttoremove.com.

Endorsements and advisors

We never list a person or organization as a supporter, partner or advisor without their written agreement.

Conflicts of interest

We do not sell reputation management services, and we do not accept payment to remove or promote any content. If the campaign ever receives funding from a company with a business interest in this issue, we will disclose it.

Money

We are not accepting donations yet. Before we do, we will publish who receives the funds, how they are used, and whether contributions are tax deductible. Until tax exempt status is granted and announced, contributions are not tax deductible.

Governance

Right to Remove is currently an independent campaign and not a registered nonprofit. As it grows, we plan to form an organization with a board, published policies and annual financial reporting, and we will describe that structure here.

Anti harassment

We do not tolerate harassment, threats or doxxing by anyone acting in the campaign's name, including against people our storytellers believe harmed them, and including against our critics. We will remove anyone who does.

Accessibility

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. If anything on this site is hard to use with your device or assistive technology, please tell us and we will fix it or provide the information another way.
