What happens before the first gift

Right to Remove asks California lawmakers to change the law. That makes it an advocacy campaign, and the rules for raising money to influence legislation differ from the rules for an ordinary charity. Right to Remove is a campaign, not a corporation or a nonprofit. Before you give, you should know three things.

  1. Who receives the money.Gifts are received by the founder of Right to Remove as an individual and are used only for the campaign's costs. They are not held by a nonprofit or a corporation.
  2. How it is reported.California has registration and reporting rules for groups that raise money for causes and for groups that spend money to influence legislation. We intend to follow both from the first day.
  3. What you are told up front.Every contribution page will say plainly whether a gift is tax deductible. Today the answer is no.

What your money pays for

Donations fund independent legal review of the proposals, secure story collection, the free guides, and briefings for lawmakers and constituents who want to testify.

We will not accept money from reputation management firms, content removal services, sites that charge people to take posts down, or data brokers. The campaign proposes rules for parts of that industry, and their money would compromise the work.

Other ways to help

The most useful support costs nothing. Sign the petition so lawmakers can see how many Californians care about this, or volunteer a few hours a month. To discuss a larger gift, write to hello@righttoremove.com.
